Research Process and Investment Selection

Research Process and Investment Selection

We access research information relative to our asset allocation and investment selection processes in association with Andrew Webster who is a member of the research collective Professional Investment Associates. (PIA)

In addition to purchasing ‘off the shelf’ research from providers like Farrelly’s, and Morningstar – PIA contracts a former Investment fund manager who provides completely independent markets updates, leads our asset allocation discussions, and undertakes one-off research on particular securities we feel we wish to consider for portfolio’s.

Within portfolio’s we frequently include assets falling within the following three general strategies of investment:-

A Market weight exposure

Sometimes described as index weighted or passively managed elements within portfolio’s. Generally these are lower cost alternatives which will give us close to market returns within particular sectors. Examples of this type of asset are the DFA funds, provided by Dimensional Fund Advisers. For additional information, refer to http://au.dimensional.com/service/individuals.aspx

Similarly, we frequently include an exposure to an Australian Stock Exchange (ASX 200) listed company called Australian Foundation Investment Company. Refer to http://www.afi.com.au  This investment company has shareholdings in all of the four big Australian banks, exposures to Australian mining companies, and also the wider Australian share market. As a generalisation, if the ASX 200 index rises, then the share price for AFI will also rise, conversely if the ASX 200 value falls then the AFI share price will also fall.

Actively Managed Investment Funds

Predominantly investment funds approved by the PIA group for inclusion in portfolio’s and supported by periodical comparative review through our research process. These funds are likely to hold other than index weights in various in various asset classes and therefore produce different performance.

Direct Investment

In individual shares or securities sourced though share brokers, such as ANZ Securities Ltd, ASB Securities Ltd, and J B Were Ltd. Justification for inclusion of individual assets is predicted on research information available from a variety of sources including through Stock Brokers, Banks and various internet sources.

Unless you have specifically authorised us to do so, no investment placements will be made without your prior approval. Our predominant guiding principal is to be very well diversified with a long term holding strategy. We do not not normally engage in a trading strategy for portfolio’s.
